Abstract:

Several medicines are used in the nervous system disorders. Since there are several adverse effects of neurological medicines are reported, traditional and complementary medicine itself as new alternative regiment, which require further knowledge about the herbal medicine which the core center of complementary medicine. Lavandula angustifolia with the formal name of Lavandula Officinalis has many effects including widespread effect on central and peripheral nervous system, including anti-inflammatory, anti-apoptosis, antioxidant, antimutant, and neuroprotective effects. It shows analgesic effects and can alleviate pain, tolerance and dependency similar to morphine. Lavandula angustifolia has anti - inflammatory effect. Also this plant affects on cellular mechanisms like oxidative reactions (decrease of oxidative stress), apoptosis (anti - apoptosis), and nitric oxide production decrease of no production), anti - mutation and anti - cancer by this plant is reportd. It seems that effects of Lavandula are mediated through Calcium-Calmodulin and its kinase dependent.

Abstract:

Background and aim: Medical plants have been used for centuries as a medicinal agent in treatment of depression and anxiety. The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of the lavendula officinalis on depression in patients using citalopram. Methods: This clinical trial study was performed in Hajar hospital, Shahrekord, Iran. In this study eighty patients randomly allocated into two groups (40 patients in each group). Patients who complained from depression were studied during a two-month double-blind study. In control group, patients were given 20 mg citalopram twice daily plus placebo and case group were treated with 5g arial part of dried Lavendula officinalis and citaloperam (20 mg, twice per day). After 4 and 8 weeks, patients were followed for evaluations of their depression and complications. Depression severity was scored using standard Hamilton's depression questionnaire. Data were analyzed using Chi square and Paired-t test. Results: After 1 month treatment, mean depression score in case and control groups were 15.2±3.6 and 17.5±3.5, respectively (P<0.05). After 2 months the mean score of depression in case and control groups was 14.8±4 and 16.8±4.6, respectively (P<0.01). The most common side effects in two groups were confusion and dry mouth, which were not significantly different between two groups. Conclusion: Lavendula officinalis has a positive effect on depressed patients and may be useful to decrease the severity of depression in patients using other antidepressants.

Abstract:

Background: Lavandula genus, the member of Lamiaceae family comprises thirty known species among which Lavandula angustifolia is economically important in toiletries and perfumery industries. L. angustifolia is commonly known in Iran as “Ostokhoddous” and is rich of essential oil. L. angustifolia oil has several medicinal and biological properties such as antispasmodic, carminative, diuretic, sedative, anti-inflammatory and analgesic, anthelmintic agent. Methods: The aim of this research was to evaluate the chemical composition of L. angustifolia oil by GC and GC-MS and its antimicrobial activity by disc diffussion and microbroth dilutution in vitro condition. Results: GC and GC-MS analysis of essential oil showed the presence of 1, 8-cineole (34.8%), borneol (24.6%), camphor (10.4%) as the main components. The antimicrobial evaluation by disc diffusion and microbroth dilution against S. aureus, S. saprophyticus, B. cereus, E. coli, S. typhimurium, C. albicans, A. niger exhibited that B. cereus (IZ=18.4 mm, MIC and MLC= 2, 4 ml/ml), S. aureus (IZ=14.9 mm, MIC and MLC= 2, 2 ml/ml), S. saprophyticus (IZ=13.0 mm, MIC and MLC= 2, 4 ml/ml) were susceptible microorganisms, while C. albicans (IZ=10.5 mm, MIC and MLC= 8, 16 ml/ml), gram negative bacteria (IZ=7.0-8.0 mm, MIC and MLC= 2-8; 4-8 ml/ml) and A. niger (IZ=7.0 mm, MIC and MLC= 16, 32 ml/ml) were less sensitive microorganisms than gram positive bacteria. Conclusion: From this explanation, the present antimicrobial activity of L. angustifolia oil against gram positive bacteria is related to its main components and because of lower antimicrobial of this component compared to phenolic compounds such as thymol or carvacrol, L. angustifolia oil appears as a medium antimicrobial agent.

Abstract:

Callus and suspension cultures of Lavandula angustifolia Mill. (Lamiaceae) were established and the effect of different culture media on growth rate was investigated. Terpenoids added to suspension culture to investigate their biotransformation. All samples were analyzed by gas chromatography (GC) and GC-mass spectroscopy (MS). Octan-1-ol, citronellol, linalool, borneol and geraniol were biotransformed products of octanal, citronellal, linalyl acetate, bornyl acetate and geranyl acetate, respectively. Citronellol, linalool, borneol, and menthol didn't change by L. angustifolia suspension cultures. Blue pigment production by cultures of L. angustifolia was also studied. Ester hydrolysis and oxidation were the main reactions which occurred in biotransformation process, which may be attributed to the presence of related or bifunctional enzymes. This technique is a possible way of the production of expensive or rare compounds from cheap and plentiful substrates.

Abstract:

Background: It has been considered by researchers to study the possibility of replacing chemical food additives such as synthetic antioxidants by natural products especially medicinal plants. Objective: The aims of this study were as follow: (i) to determine the major components of the essential oil of Lavandula angustifolia. (ii) to evaluate the antiradical activities of this essential oil by DPPH°, ABTS°+and β-carotene bleaching assays and (iii) to evaluate the antioxidant activity of this essential oil in crude soybean oil. Methods: The main chemical components of essential oil were identified by GC/MS. Antiradical an activity of mentioned essential oil was measured by different methods and finally, its antioxidant activity was determined in crude soybean oil system by Oven method. Results: Six main compounds were identified: linalool (27.89%), camphore (10.82%), 1, 8 cineol (9.05%), inalol acetate (8.86%), borneol (7.29%) and a-terpineol (5.04%). EC50 of essential oil was 35.54±1.58 mg/ml. In ABTS°+ assay, maximum antioxidant activity was related to 40 mg/ml concentration of essential oil. In β-carotene bleaching assay, maximum antioxidant activity of essential oil was related to the 10 mg/ml concentration of it (54.4 percent radical scavenging activity). In oven test, essential oil could inhibit of primary and secondary oxidation products of crude soybean oil at 0.8 mg/ml that was almost equal to BHA at 0.2 mg/ml.Conclusion: Antiradical activity of essential oil of Lavandula angustifolia was proved and it seems that after complementary examination, it can be used as natural antioxidant in food, especially those containing edible oils.
